During the 31st UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s Session, the inclusion of 6 humid forests of the east of Madagascar won unanimous support.  They are the National Parks of Marojejy, Masoala, Zahamena, Ranomafana, Andringitra, and Andohahela.  These very ancient forests support the ecological processes which are necessary for the survival of Madagascar’s unique biodiversity.  This biodiversity reflects the geological history of an island which separated from other land masses more than 60 million years ago, and the fauna and flora of which flourished within a favorable isolation.

The Eastern rainforests add up to this list of highly distinguished sites which already includes the Bemaraha Tsingy (classified in 1990), the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga near Antananarivo and the Zafimaniry Woodcraft, classified as Immaterial Heritage.
